A rhizotomy is considered an outpatient procedure and generally takes about 30 – 90 minutes to complete. This procedure also involves the use of IV sedation, which is why we recommend you have a responsible adult to accompany you to your appointment so they can drive you home afterward. Once you are prepped for your procedure, a fluoroscope will be used to guide the placement of a hollow needle and then the electrode will be inserted through the needle to apply the radiofrequency energy. Once the nerves are severed, they can no longer transmit pain signals. On average, most patients report experiencing an 80% improvement.
