About Rhizotomy

A rhizotomy is a cutting-edge procedure that utilizes radiofrequency (RF) technology to target nerves in the joints of the spinal column. This treatment is designed to alleviate chronic back pain and muscle spasms that are caused by damaged or injured facet joints. This kind of deterioration can occur from advanced age, an injury, or health condition, like arthritis. Rhizotomy is typically reserved for men and women who are experiencing long-term facet joint pain that could not be eased with more conservative methods. Our specialists at Tricity Pain Associates have helped countless patients with chronic pain and are dedicated to assisting you in any way we can to provide significant improvement. Rhizotomy Treatment

A rhizotomy is considered an outpatient procedure and generally takes about 30 – 90 minutes to complete. This procedure also involves the use of IV sedation, which is why we recommend you have a responsible adult to accompany you to your appointment so they can drive you home afterward. Once you are prepped for your procedure, a fluoroscope will be used to guide the placement of a hollow needle and then the electrode will be inserted through the needle to apply the radiofrequency energy. Once the nerves are severed, they can no longer transmit pain signals. On average, most patients report experiencing an 80% improvement.
